The establishment of this archive has been helped enormously through the support of a wide range of individuals from both inside and outside Rowner Cricket Club and I would like to thank the following for their time, trouble and assistance.
John Anthony (Rowner CC/Curdridge CC) - Recollections from late 70`s/early 80`s which enabled us to document Rowner`s first league 100
Robert Bowman (Rowner CC) - Scorebooks aplenty (unfortunately couldn`t help with the ones from before he was alive).
Ian Collins (Rowner CC) - Donated a 1990 handbook.
Mike Donaldson (Rowner CC) - Recollections and inspiration.
Richard Frazer (Rowner CC) - The 2nd XI 95-97 scorebook produced from his shed.
Marion Stanbrook (Old Alresford CC) - Kindly provided details of a 2nd XI match from the missing 2001 scorebook.
Andrew Tingey (Medstead CC) - Kindly provided details of a 2nd XI match (abandoned) from the missing 2001 scorebook.
Tony Tucker (Fareham & Crofton CC) - Kindly provided details of a 2nd XI match from the missing 2001 scorebook.
John Ward (Rowner CC) - Donated the 1990 handbook to Ian which he donated to the archive !
Keith Williams (Andover CC & South Coast Panel Umpire) - Handbooks aplenty and kind response to my plea for assistance on the HCL messageboard. Has sent many fascinating scans of old handbook pages which have detailed our league opponents and top performers over many seasons and finally helped provide a glimpse back to the earliest days and enabled us to include in the tables below players who represented Rowner over 30 years ago. Keith - you are a gentleman !
Some notes are required for this table as it is based on the records we have but in large parts it must be said it is likely to be very inaccurate. A bowler by bowler summary will clarify the extent to which the placings are likely to vary : Jason Hoskins - highly accurate unless he took many more wickets during his first spell at the club in the `80s as a youngster. Andy Lilley - slightly less so as missing his first two season`s records plus 95 and 97. Steve Smith - woefully inaccurate as missing 84-89 when he was young, quick and nasty. Ian Collins - took many wickets in the mid-late 80`s period for which we have virtually no information. Martin Bowman - 100% accurate. Cris Kemp - 90% accurate, missing a few `96 wickets only. Richard Frazer - again, very inaccurate as bowled consistently throughout the mid-late 80`s for which we have little information. Rob Bowman 100% accurate. Noel Costello - a 70`s/80`s player who made the averages in `76 and `77 one 5 wicket haul from `75 but must be missing many more wickets. Andy Stancliffe - 100% accurate. John Barfoot - as with Scouse Frazer must have taken many more wickets than we know about in the mid-late 80`s, a principal Rowner bowler after the 2nds folded in `83. Colin Webb - an Off Spinner from the late 70`s and early 80`s, made the averages in`79 and `81. A 5-for in 1980 indicates he was doing damage that year as well but we know no more. Lyndon Strong - 100% accurate. Peter Bleeck - 100% accurate.
This is a match by match summary of Rowner C.C`s inaugural season in the Hampshire League. Harold Wilson was Prime Minister and within the Labour Party debate raged about Britain`s continued membership of the E.E.C. Derby County were First Division Champions and 7 days before the first match against Park Lane at Rowner Green West Ham had defeated Fulham in the F.A Cup Final at the old Wembley Stadium. Mud were at Number 1 in the charts with Oh Boy and thankfully Punk was about to explode on the British music scene. Ian Chappell`s Australians were about to begin a four match Ashes series against Tony Greig`s England (they won 1-0) following the Prudential World Cup which had been won by the favourites, Clive Lloyd`s West Indies who had defeated the Aussies by 17 runs at Lord`s.
Rowner finished a very creditable 4th place, indicating that the 1975 edition of our 1st XI was a pretty tight outfit. Fancy a bit of our opening bowler Noel Costello ? Ask Ian Collins who actually saw him bowl. No ? Didn`t think so. One mean, quick mother ! According to Ian probably the fastest bowler Rowner have ever had !
